100 Portraits of Women and Men Between the Ages of 1 and 100

1 to 100 Years Project is an awesome portrait project by Belgian photographer Edouard Janssens in which he photographed 100 women and 100 men at each age between 1 and 100. His goal was to show the aging process in a positive manner and to provide an interesting visualization of the link between generations. He didn’t handpick the subjects either — all the participants volunteered through the project’s website (excluding the kids, of course).

Interestingly enough, Janssens himself appears in the project — his self-portrait can be seen at number 50 on the men’s side.

The photographs were also arranged into slideshow videos:

Remember when the internet was briefly outraged by this at the tail end of last week? It didn’t take the mayor of London long to realise it wouldn’t be great to have moving, bus-size adverts for homophobia parading through the city’s transport arteries, and stepped in to block them.

“Reparative therapy works to help men, who want to change their sexual orientation, naturally dissipate their homoerotic feelings and maximise their heterosexual potential,” said Reverend Lynda Rose, a spokesperson for Anglican Mainstream in the UK. Aside from making me wonder what gay men have done to Ms Rose to make her think that they’re all ill, it also made me wonder: Am I maximising my own heterosexual potential? Were the heteros of the UK maximising theirs? How do I know when I am “maximum straight”?

Reenacting the Passion of Christ is a popular tradition in parts of the Phillippines. Despite the islands calling a heavily modified version of Catholicism their state religion, voluntary crucifixion is not sanctioned by the church. Nevertheless, thousands of people stream to San Fernando Manila every year to cheer for (and beat) the participating martyrs.

Old time favourite

This is Gerda Taro, one of the first female photo journalists and an incredibly brave and talented woman with a beauty and style to match (just look at those shoes).

She went to the Spanish Civil war as protege and lover of photographer Robert Capa but became a republican icon and photographer in her own right. Sadly she was killed in an accident with a tank in Spain in 1937.

Many folks have heard of Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Most folks, however, can’t tell you anything about them. They’re dark. They’re lurking out there. That’s about it.

They’re too important to leave it at that. So, let’s look at the “whys” and “wherefores” of the Dark Duo. With today’s post, I’m going to begin this exploration with a simple fact and its cosmic (literally) interpretation.

Let’s start with a very important distinction. Dark Matter and Dark Energy have nothing (as far as we know) to do with each other. The only thing they have in common is that evocative adjective “dark,” which, for astrophysicists, simply means we can see an effect but we can’t see the cause. -Adam Frank
